September 2009
Hello and my apologies for the newsletter being late. Opening of schools and the first couple of weeks of the school year dominate my time. I thought I would get the Scuttlebutt out last weekend, but I could hear St. Somewhere calling and I spent too much time out sailing. Ok, is there such a thing as too much time sailing?? Anyway, I do apologize especially when there are two huge activities coming up this weekend and next weekend.
First, the Fall Classic Race is being held TOMORROW, Saturday, Sept. 12. The starting time is at noon. Be sure to come early to get your boat ready and receive final instructions for the race. Some of you have already contacted Mike Smittle or Karen Hawkins about entering the race. Awards will be presented at the monthly meeting on Saturday, Sept. 19. Second, the KEY WEST PIG FEST is Saturday, Sept. 19 from 5:00PM to 10:00PM at the Sailboat Cove Shelter House. Most of you have received the email reminder from Mike and Lonna. Reservations are needed so that an accurate count can be made for planning food quantities. Once again, the cost is relatively minimal….. $10 for members and $12.50 for non-members. Kids 12 and under are free. Checks can be made payable to Jacomo Cruiser Fleet. Menu delectables include: Roast Pig, Rolls, Marathon Green Beans, Penny's Duvall St. Cheesy Corn Bake, McKee's Key Potato Salad, Sloppy Clyde's (instead of Sloppy Joe's) Baked Beans, Jimmy Buffet's Fruit Medley, Paula Deen's Hurricane Punch-----more desserts, more etc... The Cruiser Fleet Roster was sent out last month and I am still receiving minor changes. I will send it out again with the updates. Occasionally, we have an opportunity to support our fleet members in various aspects outside of the happenings at the lake. That is one of the great things about this group of people. We care not just about sailing but about all involved with our little piece of the world. Many of you have met Bruce Graybill and his wife Gayla (Gayla K/MacGregor 25). What you may not know is that Bruce is a two time national mandolin champion. He will be performing in a benefit concert for his brother-in-law who is undergoing treatment for lymphoma cancer. The details are: Benefit Concert and BBQ for Mike Roark, at the Unity Temple on the Plaza (707 West 47th St. October 18, 2009 from 3PM – 9PM. Six bands will be performing on the Main Stage with other acts performing on an Acoustic Stage in the coffee shop. The cost for the concert is Adults $10, children 12 and under will be $6. If you want to add the BBQ dinner to the concert, the cost is $18 adults, children 12 and under will be $14. For more information, please see www.mikeroarkbenefit.com.
Here’s a quick rundown of the business portion of the August meeting:
Treasury report from Lonna Smittle: Ø The previous balance was $723.92 Ø $160 in fleet dues has been collected and deposited Ø $21 was collected for the new fleet burgees Ø $40 for June party guests Ø $216.92 to the Tolands for the July Cove Party Ø Ending balance of $728.00 Ø Reminder: Please continue to send in those dues to Lonna.
Thank you Neal and Penny Smith for coordinating the August Woodstock Breakfast! From what I hear it was quite a groovy experience!!
Notes and Reminders: (some of these are repeats from the last newsletter)
Ø The Sept. Cove Cleanup will tomorrow, Sept. 12 at 10:00AM. This will be the last cleanup for the season. Remember, the more people that can help, the faster it will get done especially since this is also the day of the Fall Classic Race!
Ø Plans for the Christmas Party are beginning to take shape. Bass Pro Shop was a great venue for last year’s party so that is being investigated for this year’s party, too.
Ø If you need to update your boat or personal information, there is a membership form available on the fleet website.
Ø Just a reminder to lock up the dinghies if it looks like no one will be on the dock or out sailing when you leave. We have heard that non-fleet people have been observed taking the dinghies out for a ride when no one was around.
Ø If you are interested in joining BoatUS, the fee is $12. This is at a group rate and as long as we have enough members we can continue to receive this rate. Contact Mike Smittle for the group number. Check out their website at www.boatus.com. Also, check out their quarterly newsletter…..Scuttlebutt!! http://www.boatus.com/group/Coop_newsletter_july2009.asp
Ø If you are interested in purchasing a Jacomo Cruiser Fleet burgee you better hurry! They cost $21 and $5 of the cost goes back to the fleet to help with future expenses.
Ø Neal Smith has been great at updating the website. Click on the EVENTS tab to see what’s happening this year. Many events are already on the calendar for the upcoming season.
Please feel free to contact me at dw1009ea@yahoo.com or on my cell phone 816-377-9850. I am looking forward to seeing all of you at the cove this weekend!
Fairwinds!
