May 2009 Finally it is May! I don’t know about you but I have had enough of those April showers. So far the weather outlook is promising this weekend for some good launching weather. Last I saw there were nine boats in the cove. It will be great to once again see the cove full of boats, people on the dock, and sails across the water. For those that were unable to attend the April Cove Meeting, you missed out on a terrific salad bar event. Many thanks to Theresa & Ron Dulinsky and Carla Manthei & Lyndall Blake as Hosts. They stepped in at the last minute and sliced, diced, cooked, and delivered all of the salad bar fixings. Here’s a quick rundown of the business portion of the meeting: Treasury report from Lonna Smittle: Ø The previous balance was $763.93 Ø $240 in fleet dues has been collected and deposited Ø $126 was collected for the new fleet burgees Ø $230.90 payment to All Nations Flag for burgees Ø $32.98 to Dave Baldwin for March Cove Party Ø Ending balance of $866.05 Ø Reminder: Please continue to send in those dues to Lonna. Other business: Ø If you need to update your boat or personal information, there is a membership form available on the fleet website. Ø PIG ROAST!!!! The Pig Roast has been rescheduled for September. Ø Lakefest is scheduled for June 20th. Ø June Cove Meeting is June 13th. The June Cove Cleanup will also be June 13th so the cove area will be looking nice for Lakefest. Ø Ryan Smith is leading the cove cleanup days. This is typically the Saturday morning of the weekend before the cove meetings. Remember, the more people that can help, the faster it will get done. Ø MAY COVE CLEANUP is this Saturday, May 9 at 10:00am. Ø The Spring Race has been rescheduled for May 30th. The original date was over the holiday weekend and it was decided at the April meeting that there may be too much lake activity to hold the race. If you are interested in joining BoatUS, the fee is $12. This is at a group rate and as long as we have enough members we can continue to receive this rate. Contact Mike Smittle for the group number. Check out their website at www.boatus.com. If you are interested in purchasing a Jacomo Cruiser Fleet burgee you better hurry! As of Sunday, May 3, there were only 5 or 6 left! They cost $21 and $5 of the cost goes back to the fleet to help with future expenses. Jacomo Cruiser Fleet membership cards are available from the Commodore. If you are interested in participating in or leading a workshop on anything sailing related, please contact the Commodore. This could be anything from bottom stripping/painting, to woodwork or deck work. Neal Smith has been great at updating the website. Click on the EVENTS tab to see what’s happening this year. Many events are already on the calendar for the upcoming season. The May meeting will be held at the cove on May 16 at 5:00. Members A-M should bring desserts and N-Z brings appetizers. Please feel free to contact me at dw1009ea@yahoo.com or on my cell phone 816-377-9850. If any of you have good tips for preparing the boats for the next season, feel free to email them to me and I will include them in the next newsletter. I am looking forward to seeing all of you at the cove in May! And as we all get ready to get our boat legs back, remember….. “How little do the landsmen know of what we sailors feel, when the waves do mount and winds do blow!” From The Sailor’s Revolution Fairwinds!
