 March 2010

The clocks have been changed and Spring is a mere 5 days away.  Could it be that winter is really just about over?  The last time I was at the cove, the ice was retreating quickly and a few people were gathered in the dry sail area catching up with each other.  I think most all of us are ready for the weather to break so we can get to work on the sailboats.  In the meantime, the first cove meeting of the season is coming up this weekend.  Please come out and join everyone for the annual Burning of the Socks!!  Bring your socks and be at the cove shelter at 1:00PM this Saturday, March 20th.

About 20 members, and 1 new member (Randall Bennett, “One Particular Harbor”), met at Clancy’s for the February meeting. Here is a rundown of the business portion of the February meeting:

·        There is a need for a volunteer to coordinate the cove maintenance.  As you all know, how nice the area around the shelter house looks depends on us.  With at least 5-6 people (and weed eaters), this can be taken care of in an hour or less.  Please let one of the officers know if you would be willing to coordinate the monthly cleanup efforts.  This usually takes place on the 2nd Saturday of the month.

·        Several members have volunteered to host Cove Parties this season.  We still have openings for April and October.  Please consider one of those months if you would like to host.

·        Pig Roast!!!  The Pig Roast is scheduled for June 26th.  Several members have stepped up to help coordinate the event.  Start mentioning the party to your friends.  More people who attend means more money going to the December Christmas Party.  The result of that means a lower cost to you for the Christmas Party! J

·        Crane Repair… at the time of the February meeting, the crane was out of operation.  Mike Smittle reported that the county would be willing to loan a boom truck to get the crane repaired.  I haven’t been out to the cove for a couple of weeks so I do not know if it has been repaired yet.  If it has, great!! If not, there is a plan to get it fixed soon!!

·        Our Vice Commodore, Chad Wainwright, has volunteered to coordinate activities involving sailing education or training.  If you are interested or have something you want to learn more about, email Chad at wainwrightcd@kc.rr.com .

·        A great suggestion/reminder was made at the February meeting.  For those that keep their boat on a mooring ball, remember to check the chain/clevis on the ball when you launch for the season.

The calendar is already full of events for the fleet. Go to the fleet website at  www.jacomocruiserfleet.com and click on the “schedule” tab to view the calendar.  It says 2009 but it really is for 2010.  And if you have pictures, send them to Neal Smith via the website.  Click on the “Photographs” tab and then click on the “PhotoAlbum” tab.  You can also send them directly to Neal at sugarpapaw@AOL.COM .   Thanks Neal for taking care of the website!!

“Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn’t do than by the ones you did do.  So throw off the bowlines, sail away from the safe harbor.  Catch the trade winds in your sails.  Explore.  Dream.  Discover.”
