March 2009 Can you believe this weather?? The first week of March and it’s pushing 80 degrees outside! I am so ready to get out on the water, feel the sails fill with a spring breeze, and share drinks with great friends. All I have to do is scrape, paint, wash, wax….and…..well, you all know the rest. And in the end, it is so worth all the preparation! Clancy’s was the location for the February Fleet meeting and 18 members were present for food, Mizzou basketball, and the business meeting. (ok, that’s the same opening as the last news letter but why change a good thing!) Here’s a short rundown of the business meeting: Treasury report from Lonna Smittle: Ø As of 2-21-09, ending balance of $643.93. Ø Reminder: Please continue to send in those dues to Lonna. Other business: Ø If you need to update your boat or personal information, there is a membership form available on the fleet website. Ø Reminder that volunteers are needed for main dishes for the cove meetings. Currently, the months of April, June, August breakfast, and September are still open. Ø Mac is still in need of volunteers to help with planning the Pig Roast for 2009. The possibility of moving the Pig Roast to June was discussed with the thought being an earlier event might help generate more interest in the club. Ø We are still looking for someone to be the coordinator for the monthly cove cleanup days. Remember, you don’t have to be there every month, just help coordinate it. Ø Volunteers are needed to help spruce up the flower bed at the cove….new mulch, etc. A Spring Race has been added to the Event Schedule for 2009. It will be held on May 23rd as long as there continues to be enough interest. The format of the race may be a bit different then the traditional format so come on out and enjoy! Arrrr!!!! Lakefest 2009 has been scheduled for June 20th. This means that the monthly cove meeting will be held on June 13. (What a great day for a party!! I can’t think of a better way to spend my birthday!! HA!!) Commodore Mike is checking into getting club burgees for the fleet. He has located a company that can make the burgees (12” x 14”) for a cost of $21 each. With the purchase of a burgee, $5 of the cost will go to the fleet to help raise money for future events. If you are interested in participating in or leading a workshop on anything sailing related, please contact the Commodore. Neal Smith has been great at updating the website. Click on the EVENTS tab to see what’s happening this year. Many events are already on the calendar for the upcoming season. The March meeting will be held at the cove on March 21 at 1:00. Former Commodore Dave Baldwin will be supplying Polish Sausages for grilling. Everyone else please bring chili, condiments, or other fun food and drinks. Please feel free to contact me at dw1009ea@yahoo.com or on my cell phone 816-377-9850. If any of you have good tips for preparing the boats for the next season, feel free to email them to me and I will include them in the next newsletter. I am looking forward to seeing all of you at the cove in March! Fairwinds! Doug
