July 2009

Welcome to hot July!  I was out of town for several days in June but from what I hear, it got a tad bit toasty for Lakefest and the commercial photo shoot.  Thanks to those of you who were able to get out for the photo shoot.  I understand it was a long hot afternoon.  Also, apparently there was quite a microburst that hit the cove a little over two weeks ago.  The wind managed to rearrange a few mooring balls and cause a little damage.  Many thanks to those who were out shortly after the storm and assisted in contacting members who had boats affected by the storm.  As I said, I was out of town and it wasn’t until last weekend that I found out that a fellow sailor had corrected problems the storm caused on St. Somewhere.  It is a great feeling to know that the fleet is full of people who are so willing to look after each other!

The June cove meeting was a lot of fun!  We always have great food each month!  Thanks to the Commodore, Mike Smittle, for getting the burgers and hot dogs on the grill and to Lonna Smittle and others who helped get the tables ready.

Here’s a quick rundown of the business portion of the meeting:

Treasury report from Lonna Smittle:

Ø      The previous balance was $790.50

Ø      $80 in fleet dues has been collected and deposited

Ø      $42 was collected for the new fleet burgees

Ø      $144.58 to the Ellis’ for the May Cove Party

Ø      Ending balance of $767.92

Ø      Reminder:  Please continue to send in those dues to Lonna.

Notes and Reminders: (some of these are repeats from the last newsletter)

Ø      July Cove Meeting is July 18th at 5:30pm with dinner after the meeting.

o       The June Cove Cleanup will also be July 11th at 10:00am

Ø      PIG ROAST!!!!  The Pig Roast has been rescheduled for September.  Volunteers are needed!!!.

Ø      Ryan Smith is leading the cove cleanup days.  This is typically the Saturday morning of the weekend before the cove meetings.  Remember, the more people that can help, the faster it will get done.

Ø      If you are interested in joining BoatUS, the fee is $12.  This is at a group rate and as long as we have enough members we can continue to receive this rate.  Contact Mike Smittle for the group number.  Check out their website at www.boatus.com.

Ø      If you are interested in purchasing a Jacomo Cruiser Fleet burgee you better hurry!  They cost $21 and $5 of the cost goes back to the fleet to help with future expenses.

Ø      Jacomo Cruiser Fleet membership cards are available from the Commodore.

Ø      Neal Smith has been great at updating the website.  Click on the EVENTS tab to see what’s happening this year. Many events are already on the calendar for the upcoming season.

Please feel free to contact me at dw1009ea@yahoo.com  or on my cell phone 816-377-9850.  If any of you have good tips for preparing the boats for the next season, feel free to email them to me and I will include them in the next newsletter.

I am looking forward to seeing all of you at the cove this weekend!
