January 2010
Ahoy everyone! It is the beginning of a new year, a new decade, and hopefully the end of the snow for awhile. Sheeesh!!! I don’t know about you but having been through 3 shovels I would be just fine with not seeing another snowfall for quite a long time! I was out of town for the first half of the storms enjoying some great skiing on the slopes in New Mexico where it was warmer on the mountains than it was here. What about you? Anyone else get away to a warmer climate during the cold spell? The only thing I am wondering is…..did I get the bow of the boat high enough so it will drain when all the snow melts????
On December 19th, approximately 50 members and friends from both the Cruiser Fleet and the Racing Fleet gathered at the Islamorada Fish Company restaurant for the annual Christmas Party. After enjoying a drink or two and catching up with each other, we shared a great dinner and delicious dessert. Thanks to Mike and Lonna Smittle for coordinating the event and reserving the banquet room.
A short business meeting followed the meal along with the election of officers. Here’s a rundown of the meeting:
· From the treasurer, Lonna Smittle: o More money was spent this year on food and decorations for the monthly cove meetings. A few generous people asked not to be reimbursed for their expenses while hosting or assisting with a cove meeting. o There was an initial balance of $798 at the beginning of December. The money collected from those at the Christmas party, along with the beginning monthly balance, pretty much covered the cost of the Christmas party. This leaves us going into the 2010 season with just about a zero balance which is what happens at the end of every year.
· Cash donations were collected and a donation was made to the Community Services League. · There was a suggestion made to increase the yearly Cruiser Fleet dues to $50. After a few minutes of discussion, a motion was made, seconded, and passed by vote to increase the dues to $50 for 2010.
To pay your dues, make checks payable to Jacomo Cruiser Fleet and mail to JCFYC Treasurer:

· There is a need for a volunteer to coordinate the cove maintenance. As you all know, how nice the area around the shelter house looks depends on us. With at least 5-6 people (and weed eaters), this can be taken care of in an hour or less. Please let one of the officers know if you would be willing to coordinate the monthly cleanup efforts. This usually takes place on the 2nd Saturday of the month.
· Regarding a couple of annual events: o The Pig Roast will most likely be moved to earlier in the season, perhaps June. o The Fall Classic will once again be held….in the Fall. Larry, don’t get too too attached to that trophy!! J
· And finally, here are the results of the Election of Officers for 2010: o Commodore – Mike Smittle o Vice Commodore –Chad Wainwright o Secretary – Doug White, o Treasurer – Lonna Smittle
This just in from our new Vice Commodore (ok, that sounds like one of those old news real flashes from about 60 years ago!!)
“Hello All,
You may want to pass this on to the fleet. I went out to sailboat cove today. The county has maintained access into the cove. The parking lot has even been plowed! I took a look at all of the boats and it looks like everything is well with all of the boats. There is a lot of snow on most of the tarps that could use some attention. The good new is we can all make it in there. I didn’t know but access has been maintained. To get there access Cowherd Rd. to Jasper Bell to East Park Rd to the cove.”
As always, please be checking the Jacomo Cruiser Fleet website at www.jacomocruiserfleet.com for updated information and pictures.
And finally, the January meeting will be held at Clancy’s in Blue Springs at 12:00 on Saturday, Jan. 16. Clancy’s is on the south outer road off I-70 between Woods Chapel and Hwy. 7. It is closest to Hwy 7.
