August 2009
Who would have thought that the average temperature for the month of July would actually be cooler than the average for the month of June? How lucky we’ve been to have some great weather for sailing. And at times, blankets have been needed for those spending the night in the cool evenings.
Last weekend, Aug. 1, I counted 11 boats on the dock at dinner time. Food was being grilled, kids were having a great time, many people were engaged in great conversation, and it was a great evening! It is days like this that are perfect examples of what it means to be a part of the cruiser fleet. How fortunate we are to have our little spot in the world!
On July 17, the Jacomo Day Camp was treated to rides on the lake by members of the fleet. Marty Swindell, Director of Jacomo Day Camp wanted to personally thank Clyde Hestand, Ed Schwartz, F.Kirk Powell, Chad Wainwright, and Dave Baldwin for sharing their time and boats to take the 11-13 year olds and camp counselors on sailboat rides.
Many thanks to Carl and Terri Toland and their friends, Gwen and Rick, for hosting the July party. As always, it was a great eating experience!! Thanks to all of you!
Congratulations are in order for Rick Sauer and his boat “Lucky Lee”. Rick and his crew were the winners for best decorated boat during this year’s Lakefest! They combined the 50th anniversary of Lake Jacomo with the 50th anniversary of statehood for Hawaii.
Here’s a quick rundown of the business portion of the July meeting:
Treasury report from Lonna Smittle: Ø The previous balance was $767.92 Ø $165 in fleet dues has been collected and deposited Ø $21 was collected for the new fleet burgees Ø $20 for June party guests Ø $250 to the Smiths and Smittles for the June Cove Party Ø Ending balance of $723.92 Ø Reminder: Please continue to send in those dues to Lonna.
Notes and Reminders: (some of these are repeats from the last newsletter)
Ø WOODSTOCK BREAKFAST!! o August Cove Meeting is Aug. 16th at 10:00 am with breakfast after the meeting. o The theme is Woodstock so come dressed in your best Woodstock attire! It is breakfast so I don’t know if the brownies with the “Special Ingredients” qualifies as breakfast food! o The Aug. Cove Cleanup will Aug. 8th at 10:00am
Ø If you need to update your boat or personal information, there is a membership form available on the fleet website.
Ø The Annual Fall Classic race will be held on Saturday, Sept. 12th. This is the same day as the cove cleanup so let’s all gather to clean and race!
Ø Just a reminder to lock up the dinghies if it looks like no one will be on the dock or out sailing when you leave. We have heard that non-fleet people have been observed taking the dinghies out for a ride when no one was around.
Ø PIG ROAST!!!! The Pig Roast has been scheduled for September 19th. Volunteers are needed!!! o Extend invitations to your friends. The more people, the more fun! And the added revenue will help the fleet at the end of the year. o Be looking for more info on assistance with side dishes. (At this point in the meeting discussion, Larry Ballew volunteered rum….as a side dish??)
Ø Ryan Smith is leading the cove cleanup days. This is typically the Saturday morning of the weekend before the cove meetings. Remember, the more people that can help, the faster it will get done.
Ø If you are interested in joining BoatUS, the fee is $12. This is at a group rate and as long as we have enough members we can continue to receive this rate. Contact Mike Smittle for the group number. Check out their website at www.boatus.com. Also, check out their quarterly newsletter…..Scuttlebutt!! http://www.boatus.com/group/Coop_newsletter_july2009.asp
Ø If you are interested in purchasing a Jacomo Cruiser Fleet burgee you better hurry! They cost $21 and $5 of the cost goes back to the fleet to help with future expenses.
Ø Jacomo Cruiser Fleet membership cards are available from the Commodore.
Ø Neal Smith has been great at updating the website. Click on the EVENTS tab to see what’s happening this year. Many events are already on the calendar for the upcoming season.
Please feel free to contact me at dw1009ea@yahoo.com or on my cell phone 816-377-9850. If any of you have good tips for preparing the boats for the next season, feel free to email them to me and I will include them in the next newsletter.
I am looking forward to seeing all of you at the cove this weekend!
Fairwinds!
